A pristine theatre, dating back to 1362 and intended to host the cultural activities of the Sapienza Vecchia boarding school, was located in a large room with cross vaults. In the second half of the 18th century it was called the “Teatro Nazionale dell’Accademia di Belle Lettere ed Arti” and until the pre-Napoleonic era (1798) it hosted numerous Italian and foreign travelling companies; it is said that the young Carlo Goldoni performed there. Following the 19th-century renovation of the building, the theatre was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, in the new wing of the complex. Today, it appears as a medieval hall, divided into two bays with ribbed cross vaults. The stage equipment reproduces, on a smaller scale, the typology of larger opera houses, such as La Scala in Milan. An elegant gallery-loggia surrounds half of the stalls. The decorations of the main hall and the adjacent ‘Sala rossa’ were realised by the Perugian painters L. Rossi Scotti and M. Tassi. In the last years of the 20th century the theatre was restored and consequently reopened to the public.

The construction of the Church of San Francesco al Prato, the first Franciscan church after the one built in Assisi, dates back to 1251. The church became an important site in Perugia when Egidio (1190-1262), a disciple of Saint Francis, was buried there. The church remained uncovered for years due to the collapse of the vaults caused by landslides on the hill. The altars and chapels were lost, while the polychrome façade was restored in 1926 by the architect Pietro Angelini. In the early 2000s a substantial restoration, based on an original project by Bruno Signorini, was started to transform the building into an auditorium. One of the most important sites in the history of the city of Perugia, the Church of San Francesco was embellished by precious works of art: the Baglioni Altarpiece, today in the Borghese Gallery, and the Coronation of the Virgin (known as the Oddi Altarpiece), both by Raphael, and the Resurrection by Perugino, the latter preserved in the Vatican. The Church is also known for having been the Pantheon of Perugia, where the major families of the city had their tombs, together with captains, jurists and men of letters. The adjacent convent, which includes the Oratory of San Bernardino, has been home to the ‘Pietro Vannucci’ Academy of Fine Arts and its museum since the beginning of the 20th century.

San Michele Arcangelo is a Catholic church located in Perugia. One of the most ancient early Christian churches in Italy (5th-6th Centuries), it was most likely built on the remains of a Roman temple, itself built on land sacred to the Etruscans. Also called Orlando’s Pavilion, Temple of St. Michael the Archangel, Temple of St. Angelo, Temple of Porta Sant’Angelo or Tempietto, this church stands on one of the highest points of the city and can be reached by climbing up through Corso Garibaldi and crossing a narrow driveway. A small green courtyard leads to the building. The structure retains typical Roman features. The interior consists of two concentric compartments, separated by sixteen repurposed Roman columns with Corinthian capitals, and four chapels arranged in the shape of a Greek cross. There are 12 windows to allow a bright light to grace the space. Mystery enthusiasts passing through Perugia cannot fail to pay a visit to this church. Indeed, very peculiar symbols appear inside. On the entrance jambs and around the neck of the Madonna in one of the frescoes, patent crosses can be seen: representations linked to the mystical universe of the Templars, a religious brotherhood of the Middle Ages whose legendary history is full of secrets and enigmas. A few meters from the entrance, moreover, a pentagram makes its appearance, a symbol linked to the cult of Venus, associated with black magic in the Middle Ages.

The Church of San Filippo Neri is the most important and the only authentic Baroque building in Perugia. The Vignola-style facade dates back to 1665 and was designed by the Roman architect Paolo Marucelli, while the church itself was built between 1627 and 1634. With its barrel vaulted single nave and lateral chapels, the interior is richly decorated with frescoes of a variety of painters who worked on them between the 17th and the 18th century. The Immaculate Conception above the main altar is by Pietro da Cortona and was painted in 1662.

The former parish church of Santa Maria di Colle was renovated in the 1700s by Alessio Lorenzini, the same architect who designed the Teatro Comunale “Francesco Morlacchi” in Perugia. The church has then been used as a concert hall since 1961, when it was equipped with a 1375-pipe Mascioni organ, with 3 manuals and pedal board. With excellent acoustics for chamber music, and two grand pianos, the Auditorium Marianum is the main venue for all the activities of the Istituto Musicale “Girolamo Frescobaldi”. Renowned musicians such as organists Fernando Germani and James Goettsche, and harpsichordist Kenneth Gilbert, performed here. Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt held her Third International Piano Masterclass at the Auditorium in 2016. The Auditorium houses paintings by 17th and 18th-Century artists Benedetto Bandiera, Giacomo Boccanera, Cristoforo Gasperi, and Vincenzo Monotti.

A valuable baroque theater, the Oratorio Santa Cecilia was built in just three years to a design by Pietro Baglioni (1687-90), its plan in the form of a Greek cross, with a square central mass and four arms of equal length. Located in the historic center of Perugia, it is the only Baroque monument in the city, together with the adjacent Church of San Filippo Neri. It was the first building in Perugia specially created as a music hall, upon request of the Fathers of the Congregation of the Oratory. Above the stage we can see ‘The Madonna and Child with Santa Cecilia’ by Carlo Lamparelli di Spello, dated 1688. A double cornice identifies two tiers of boxes. The Auditorium is surmounted by a large and bright dome. After decades of decay and neglect it was restored and reopened to the public in 2001. It is currently used for concerts and cultural events.

Villa Valvitiano consists of the main residence from the early 1800s and the orangerie dating back to the late 1700s. Built by the Conestabile della Staffa as a country house, it then became a property of the families Bonucci Piccolomini first and then, from the end of the 1950s, Buitoni. The park is enriched with monumental trees and has an Italian garden on two levels which hosts, in the warmer seasons, the lemon collection sheltered in the orangerie during the winter. It is surrounded by five hundred olive trees and offers a spectacular view of Assisi and Mount Subasio.

The Teatro degli Illuminati in Città di Castello, commissioned by the local society of the “Accademici Illuminati”, was built by architect Antonio Gabrielli. It opened to the public in the year 1666. The theatre has been active for a long time, with several renovations during the years, until it was decided to rebuild it completely in 1783. In 1939 it was sold to the municipality of Città di Castello. The latest restorations took place in 1979 and in 1984. After these final works, the Teatro degli Illuminati became what we see today. Stalls and gallery can seat up to four hundred people. The theatre is used as one of the venues for the famous Festival delle Nazioni, as well as hosting many other cultural events.

In 2017 we held the thirteenth edition of the Trasimeno Music Festival. Those of you who have already visited us know the magic of Lake Trasimeno. Situated in the heart of Umbria, just twenty minutes from the historic city of Perugia, it is one of the most beautiful natural sights in Italy, and the country’s fourth largest lake. The main festival venue is the Castle of the Knights of Malta in Magione, with its stunning 15th-century courtyard. The festival brings together musicians and music-lovers from all over the world for a week.

How to begin? The week in which I present my Trasimeno Music Festival is always so intense that it would take thousands of words to describe it all! This year, even after many wonderful festivals in the past, was our best. So much thought goes into the programming, the choice of artists, the venues, the locations for the extra events and gala dinners, the logistics....you have no idea. And then of course I play myself a massive amount of repertoire during the week — much of it from memory. Some people ask why I play in six of the seven concerts. The answer is easy: if I didn’t I simply wouldn’t put on the festival.
