July 2 / Città di Castello & Montone
Departure at 10:00 am
Guided tour of Città di Castello, enclosed in a ring of Renaissance walls and a small historic centre that is pleasant to explore. Much of the artistic heritage in the town dates from the rule of the Vitelli in the 15th century, with the palaces and churches having a Tuscan influence, a result of the close bonds between the Vitelli family and the Medici of Florence.
Discover Montone, a charming hilltop village surrounded by the green hills of the Upper Tiber Valley. Though rooted in the 9th century, Montone took on its fortified, stone appearance in the medieval period. It is difficult not to be enchanted by the magic of the place walking through its narrow and tortuous streets surrounded by impervious walls, where you can still breathe that typical medieval atmosphere.
Lunch in a local restaurant, a genuine food experience, perfect for the body and mind.
July 3 / Sassovivo Abbey & Spello
Morning departure to the Abbey of Sassovivo, set in the idyllic natural landscape near Foligno. The Abbey was founded by the Benedictines around 1070 and its layout was based on an existing castle of the Monaldi family. It includes a Romanesque cloister (1229) with a fresco depicting the Virgin Enthroned with Child (14th century), the monastery with a fresco of the Last Supper (1595) and the 13th century dormitories, the Loggia del Paradiso with fragments of 15th-century frescoes, the Crypt of the Blessed Alano (11th century) – a remain of Santa Maria in Valle, the first nucleus of the Sassovivo Abbey. Then on to the nearby delightful small hill town of Spello with a labyrinth of floral decorated streets and modern art shops. Visit to the Baglioni Chapel decorated with superb frescoes by the Umbrian Renaissance master Pinturicchio. At the end of the tour enjoy a genuine lunch in a local restaurant. Return to Perugia.
July 6 / Carapace winery & Bevagna
Departure at 9:45 am
Visit to the Umbrian wine estate “Tenuta Castelbuono”, which is devoted to the production of a rich and
fascinating wine, Montefalco Sagrantino.
Guided tour of the winery, with tasting of the current vintages of 4 representative wines along with some typical products such as cold cuts, cheeses, bruschetta with extra-virgin olive oil, sweet Roccetti del Carapace and organic honey.
Under Arnaldo Pomodoro’s Carapace, nature, art and architecture interact with each other. Then on to Bevagna, for a stroll to enjoy this small, wonderfully preserved medieval gem.
Top off the tour with a light lunch in a local restaurant. An overall gourmet experience!
